every now and then.... like 'damn' once a while isn't a big deal. but like the F and S words are never acceptable. It's a place to learn. A place for professionalism.....

There were times in my anthropology class that I not only didn't mind it, but I liked it. He was using profanity to teach us. I can't exactly recall what it was. But I am pretty sure it had something to do with Cultural Relativism. He was showing us that what is OK in some cultures is bad in others, and it has nothing to do with 'right' and 'wrong'.

Something I really dislike is bringing politics into the classroom. My speech teacher expressed his anti-Bush sentiments and then asked people in the class to stand if they were going to vote for him. That, to me, is unprofessional, and I even dislike Bush.

what about religion in the classroom? the only bad experience i've had with a teacher on this subject is 9th grade english. mrs. heller was talking about it, so i shared my views on it... only to suffer some dirty looks from her. and i got a B... but that was probably from not reading... or writing... or anything else related to an english class for that matter.

heh, I once had a teacher make a statement that started with "We, as Christians,...", I didn't like that.

I don't mind a teacher using profanity in the classroom. I do think there are better choices of words, but if that is the only way they can get a point across then I'd actually prefer it.

On the religion issue, I would have to say that a teacher should do their best to keep their views on religion as well as politics out of the classroom.

if that's the case, why should the teacher be able to express any opinions whatsoever?

It's not their job to express opinions, it's their job to teach. They should just be giving the facts. I don't necessarily mean they have to completely eliminate their opinions, but they should try to keep it to a minimum.

i completely agree. teachers are paid to teach, not think or have opinions. however we cannot forget that most teachers are humans as well. and many humans have feelings and can often develop a closeness to their students.

if we want them to stop thinking out loud, we have to make them nervous. they won't say something controversial if they think they could get fired for it.

this is why i propose that whenever a teacher calls on someone not raising their hands, YOU should be the one to stand up and say "You don't have to answer that."

My gov't teacher is very outspoken, he lets us know his opinions and is not afraid to say things he probably shouldn't really say in teaching us

a little bit, it wouldn't be so bad if he didn't do it so much, and maybe if he didn't yell every word out of his mouth

So I have gathered that it is generally ok to swear but religon is completely out. I agree w/ that. I was thinking about being a teacher for awhile but refocused my thoughts. Being a teacher is a very powerful thing, a good teacher can get a class to question their beliefs, so they can reafirm them again. "But with great power comes great responsibility," Uncle Ben, Spiderman. They could also do lots of harm by forcing thoughts that should not be forced. Which brings up another question? Should teachers give more or less opinion in College teaching in compaired to K-12?

i think grade school teachers should feel more restricted about personal beliefs and opinions.

I agree, now that I am in college I don't have the same concerns that I did when I was in grade school. I do not care how my professor tries to teach me, I am there to learn, not to form opinions, I have already formed those.
